Beretta Farms pride themselves on raising their animals much like they raise their our own family – with care, compassion and commitment.  When Mike started his business alongside wife Cynthia more than 20 years ago, their animals were raised on their 800 acre home farm in King City, ON they have come a long way since then read on to learn more about Mike Beretta and the wonderful world of Canadian Heritage Angus Beef.

When and how did your journey begin at Beretta Farms?

Cynthia and I have been committed to farming and raising animals and selling meat since 1992. Our journey began with 2 pigs which grew into a herd of cattle, sheep, chickens, turkeys and rabbits. Three years after starting out, we lost our barn in a terrible fire. We were very fortunate to live near an Old Order Mennonite community and were able to rebuild the barn the following year. We have not looked back since and have gone on to own a butcher shop and abattoir and selling into a wider and wider market. Both my parents joined the business until retirement and our 3 children have all grown up in it and continue to play roles. We began exporting to Europe about 4 years ago under the Heritage Angus brand.

What makes Heritage Angus beef different to others around the world?

We firmly believe that the health of the land and the health of the animal are critical to producing wholesome top-quality beef.Our cattle are outside and have access to clean water and fresh air all year round.Canada has provided us vast land to work with a network of other family farms across the country who we know and trust.  These farms were hand selected for our animals to be raised on, as we know they adhere to the same rules and beliefs that we do, along with passing several strict annual audits.


Tell us a little about the life of the cattle?

Our cattle are born in April, May and June during the spring months so that calving is easier and the mother cows can take advantage of the fresh grasses. In order to achieve those calving dates, the mother cows run with the bulls in the summer from June to August. Cows are pregnant for approximately 10 months. The calves suckle their mothers and slowly learn to eat grass on pasture until the fall when they are weaned off of their mothers. Generally they are about 500 lbs at that time with the males (called steers) a little heavier than the females (called heifers). These calves form new groups and often leave their birth ranch and move to a new ranch that focuses on growing them called backgrounding. The mothers are pregnancy checked to confirm that they are indeed pregnant and going to give a calf the following spring. The busiest times of year on the ranch are the spring during calving and the fall during weaning and pregnancy checking. Winter and Summer tend to be somewhat slower and the animals are either grazing or hunkering down during the winter.
