What Is Halal Meat?

Halal meat adheres to Islamic laws which govern how it is reared and slaughtered. To be classed as halal, the meat is required to be slaughtered via a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. Halal meat cannot contain alcohol and the animal must be fed a vegetarian diet and must not be treated with growth hormones or antibiotics.

How is Halal Meat Slaughtered?

Halal meat is slaughtered by cutting across the throat with a sharp blade. This method severs the carotid arteries, jugular vein and windpipe. The animal must be healthy and alive at the time of slaughter, and the blood is then drained from the carcass.

Is Halal the Same as Kosher?

Halal meat and Kosher meat are different. Halal requires a certain method of slaughter and must not contain alcohol, be fed a vegetarian diet and not be treated with growth hormones or antibiotics. For Kosher meat, the animal is required to have split hooves and chew their cud. Animals must be killed by a specially trained sochet.

Is Halal Meat Grass-Fed?

Halal meat can either be grass-fed or grain-fed depending on how the animal is reared. There are no restrictions on whether it should be grass-fed or not, but the animal should be fed a vegetarian diet and be treated well during its lifetime, as well as the animals being healthy at the time of slaughter.

Is Pork Halal?

Pork is “haram”, which means it is prohibited in the Muslim religion, so it isn’t classed as halal meat. In terms of cultural views, other types of meat, such as beef, or chicken, are seen as a healthier and cleaner option.

Where Can I Buy Halal Meat Near Me?

If you want to ensure your meat is halal, you must buy from a butcher with traceability of their products, as well as a halal certification which shows the butchering process adheres to strict halal standards.

Here at Tom Hixson, all of our halal products are certified to meet strict laws and regulations regarding the rearing and slaughtering methods of the animal. To find out more about our halal meat range, watch our video here.

How Is Halal Meat Killed?

Halal animals are slaughtered with a sharp instrument, which is used to cut the animal's throat and windpipe. The carcass is drained fully of blood before being broken down into various butcher cuts.

Does Halal Meat Taste Different?

Generally, halal meat tastes the same, if not better, than ‘normal’ meat. Because the animals are fed a 100% natural diet, and allowed to grow at a normal pace, often their meat is more flavourful than those on the supermarket shelf.

Is Stunned Meat Halal?

No. Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter to be considered halal. They must also be slaughtered with a slit across the throat, however stunning can sometimes kill an animal, meaning it hasn’t been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.
